Aloha mai kākou,

Happy Holidays! We wish peace to all in our community in the coming year!  As many of you know, the recent storm caused some damage to the Waipiʻo Valley Beach Access Road. Thanks to many members of the community the roadway is now clear, although there is still cleanup to be done at the beach. We encourage the ocean community to help with stewardship each time you go down.  Please share any photos of these efforts to admin@oceanaccesswaipio.org or to our instagram @maka.waipio!

We also wanted to share news regarding Waipiʻo Valley Road, (the County road that extends from the lookout to the Valley floor).   DPW is beginning surveying and Investigation for upcoming roadwork improvement. Below is the upcoming closure schedule.

  • Daily closures are scheduled from 7:30AM-1PM from Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, through Friday, Dec. 30, 2022.
  • Additional work may continue from Wednesday, Jan 4, 2023 through Friday, Jan. 6, 2023. As a result, workers will be present; however, no closures are anticipated at this time. We will continue to send updates as we get them.

In regards to beach access at any time, the Waipiʻo Valley Road is open unless there is active roadwork underway. A Hawaii Island ID is required. The County recently stationed a security guard at the top of the Valley when County Information Officers are not present to check residency. The Kupuna Checkpoint was removed prior to the storm, and as of this email has not been rebuilt.

We are thankful to the local Utility companies as well as the Police Dept. for their continued efforts to keep our roadways clear and safe. Captain Kahalewai of the Honokaʻa Police Dept has been very helpful and is working hard to keep the community informed.

Mahalo!
